What security measures are in place in San Diego for visitors?

The health and safety of WSIA members is our top priority during Annual Marketplace, and we have worked closely with our hotel partners regarding the security measures in place for attendees. Like in any large city, you should be aware of your surroundings and avoid situations where you feel uncomfortable. The City of San Diego has initiatives in place to address homelessness within the city, and to enhance safety for guests to the city. These include increased shelter capacities, expansion of safe sleeping and parking programs, implementation of the Unsafe Camping Ordinance and development of affordable housing. Thanks in part to these programs, the city has documented a decrease in unsheltered individuals over the last year. WSIA also supports these initiatives

Additional Hotel Security Precautions

  • The Hyatt and Marriott hotels maintain 24-hour CCTV surveillance and have implemented enhanced lighting across their properties to bolster safety at night.
  • The Harbor Police Department and San Diego Police Department have intensified foot and vehicle patrols in the vicinity.
  • Uniformed security professionals will be on-site at the Hyatt and Marriott and on the boardwalk. These off-duty law enforcement officers will monitor for attendee safety during Annual Marketplace.
  • The Director of Hotel Security Association fosters ongoing communication among downtown San Diego hotels to address safety concerns promptly.

Security Outside Hotel - Clean & Safe Safety Ambassadors

  • Clean & Safe Safety Ambassadors enhance and complement the City of San Diego's Police Department, acting as an extra set of eyes and ears for law enforcement and property owners and respond to service calls in a matter of minutes. Safety ambassadors help to deter aggressive panhandling and other nuisance behavior, assist with directions and information, maintain open communications with police to report ongoing issues and provide safety escort services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Download a brochure about the Clean & Safe Safety Ambassadors program.
  • We encourage attendees to download the Clean & Safe Safety Ambassadors mobile app from the App Store for iOS or Google Play for Android devices to learn more and request services.
  • To request services from a Safety Ambassador in San Diego, such as a walking escort, use the mobile app and choose "safety request" or call or text 619-414-2698.

General Safety Tips

  • Do not answer the door in a hotel room without verifying who it is.
  • When returning to your hotel at night, use the main entrance of the hotel and look around before entering parking lots.
  • Close your hotel door securely with all available locks when you enter your room.
  • Place all valuables in the hotel safe.
  • Know your destination and the best way to reach it. Travel along well-lit routes and don't walk alone if possible. Don't be distracted by your cell phone or headphones.
  • Remove your meeting badge outside the hotels.
  • Establish a “buddy” system with another meeting attendee; share schedules and check up on each other periodically.
  • Do not give money to panhandlers. Monetary solicitation is illegal in the downtown convention area.
  • Laptop computers are attractive, easy targets for thieves. Be sure your laptop is in a secure place.
  • Note that the U.S. Department of State travel advisory for Baja, California state in Mexico, which borders San Diego, continues. You can learn more about the advisory here

What is the shortest route between the two meeting hotels?

To accommodate our growing number of annual attendees, WSIA meeting spaces are co-headquartered at the Manchester Grand Hyatt and Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina. You should schedule meetings accordingly to allow time to move between the two properties. A clear, well-signed walking route will highlight the shortest route between the hotels.
