WSIA member firms and their employees rely on the association to provide a host of services that enhance the effectiveness and successes of the wholesale, specialty and surplus lines industry.  WSIA programs and services can be categorized into five main areas.

Widely-recognized for its Annual Marketplace, Underwriting Summit, Insurtech Conference and U40 Annual Meeting, WSIA members rely upon these unparalleled networking opportunities to develop relationships and partnerships that help grow their business. These premier industry events are attended by thousands of delegates each year.

Legislative Advocacy & PAC

Many legislative and regulatory issues impact the surplus lines industry, and WSIA monitors these issues and serves as the membership's advocate every day. This presence and expertise at the state level and in Washington D.C. is a benefit that most members could not afford to be without, but also a difficult task to undertake individually. A collective voice for the industry is vitally important and the Association makes that happen seamlessly for members by developing relationships with other industry trade associations and legislators.

WSIA’s legislative efforts are also advanced by the WSIA PAC, which is committed to supporting candidates for the U.S. House and Senate whose philosophies and attitudes are consistent with the goals of WSIA, the industry and the wholesale distribution system.

Education and Professional Development

WSIA offers career-long professional learning to advance the careers and develop the talents of members' employees. The association offers a full-slate of education courses for new and seasoned E&S professionals. WSIA education programs offer students exposure to a variety of perspectives from industry professionals and are hosted in locations across the county. Designed to strengthen knowledge and cultivate strong leadership skills, WSIA schools are offered in a progressive format so students are appropriately challenged from the time they enter the industry throughout their careers.

Career Development, Internships & U40

Committed to all phases of career development, WSIA also places college students in paid summer intern positions with member firms. WSIA interns work with both company and wholesale broker members and gain hands-on experience in all facets of the business in locations across the country, preparing them for fulfilling careers in the industry upon graduation.

WSIA's U40 is comprised of employees of member firms who are 40 and younger, and work to raise awareness about career opportunities in surplus lines by conducting educational visits at college campuses and symposiums across the country.

The WSIA Education Foundation is also dedicated to encouraging the educational development of those interested in the wholesale, specialty and surplus lines industry. With support from WSIA member firms, the Foundation supports numerous industry initiatives, including:

  • Financial support of three education programs for WSIA members each year
  • Scholarships for risk management students totaling more than $100,000 annually
  • Maintaining and improving the Associate in Surplus Lines (ASLI) designation program
  • A.M. Best Company's annual review of the surplus lines segment
  • Student-focused symposiums and career fairs for risk management majors

WSIA and its members are committed to the wholesale distribution system and know that its ability to respond with speed, skill and innovation fills an important need in the insurance marketplace. Wholesalers bring expertise and vast experience in working with niche markets and are dedicated to covering exposures that don’t fit in the standard market and they do it with creativity, flexibility, value and integrity which ultimately benefits retail agents and end consumers. WSIA messages that value to the insurance industry through earned editorial content, paid advertising and the use of social media.
